MSP Network Topology allows you to scan your network of devices and visualize it by building a topology map of the network. Based upon the SolarWinds Orion Network Topology Mapper product, the MSP Network Topology map provides you with the following information about your network:

  • The monitoring status of scanned devices.
  • A list of services of a SolarWinds N-central-managed device.
  • Allows you to deep link from the topology map to the device details view, if the node is successfully managed by a SolarWinds N-central agent or probe.

Components

MSP Network Topology uses a multi-level discovery engine, which uses a combination of protocols and goes through three distinct phases to discover every node on a network and to produce a highly accurate map:

  • Topology scanner
    • Carries out the topology scan and provides data for the SolarWinds N-central agent to submit it to the SolarWinds N-central server.
    • Uses a combination of ICMP, SNMP and WMI protocols to detect devices.
    • Uses CDP, LLDP, Bridge table and also Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) to detect the role of each node.
    • Topology uses SNMP polling to retrieve CDP and LLDP data, based on the SolarWinds Orion Network Topology Mapper product. Please refer to this document to find out what SNMP OIDs the scanner polls for network topology information.
  • Enrichment service
    • Retrieves additional information found during scan about individual devices that are managed by a SolarWinds N-central agent or probe.
  • Calculation
    • Uses a complex algorithm to calculate connectivity between nodes.

There is additionally and API layer that delivers data to the Topology user interface, which consists of a number of pages of which two are important:

  • Topology Viewer – provides an interface where you can see the Map of scanned network, inventory of devices on the map canvas, as well as a details panel that gives more information of managed devices.

How does it work?

The network scan begins once a topology job has been created, configured, and scheduled. During the scan, information is collected about the network devices and subnets, and the relationships among them. During the compilation of this information, the enrichment service correlates additional data such as the status, labels, and management details, and displays all of the relevant data in the topology viewer.

If multiple Topology Jobs are scheduled to run at the same time, they will all be marked as 'In Progress'. However, only one job at a time will be processed. What Are Network Maps?

A physical network map diagrams all the actual components of your network, including cords, plugs, racks, ports, servers, cables, and more. A physical network map gives you a visual representation of all the material elements of your network and the connections between them.

A logical map is more abstract than the physical network map. It shows the type of network topology (bus, ring, etc.), and how the data flows between the physical objects in your network. This includes IP addresses, firewalls, routers, subnets and subnet masks, traffic flow, voice gateways, and other segments of the network.

How Does Network Mapping Work?

Network mapping is the process of visualizing all the devices on your network, how they’re connected, and how the overall network is structured. The network map generally equips you with information about whether the network is functioning properly or whether any particular device has a problem.

Networks are set up in different structures, also called topologies. The structure can have a major effect on how your network functions, what happens when a device or server goes down, and how complex it is to manage. When you map your network, you’re basically mapping its topology into a visual network diagram.

  • Bus – A bus network is set up in a straight line, allowing data to flow through the network from the server to each node one by one

With ring and bus topologies, a problem with one node can cause the whole network to go down
  • Star – A star topology has one central node with all others coming off it in a star pattern
  • Mesh – A mesh network has connections between all the nodes and servers, like a lattice or mesh. It has high failover protection because if one node goes down, the network can reroute the data to get it where it needs to go
  • Hybrid – A hybrid topology is simply a combination of any or all the above network structures and is very common as networks get larger

Of course, all these types of network maps are only as useful as they are accurate, which means you need an appropriate and high-quality tool. While mapping can be done manually using tools like ping and tracert, followed by a visual mapping or vector program, this process can be prohibitively time-consuming.
