- Virtualbox Guest Additions Windows Xp Sp3
- Virtualbox Guest Additions Windows Xp Service Pack
- Virtualbox Guest Additions For Windows Xp
May 29, 2010 I'm running WIndows XP as a guest in Ubuntu, 9.04 Karmic Koala. I'm running VirtualBox 3.0.8OSE r53138. The install of Virtual Box goes just great, installed windows xp, upgraded WIndows XP to SP3 with no issues. Now, clicking 'Devices - Install Guest Additions' does not bring up the installer for the VBox Guest Additions. While trying to install guest additions in a Sun VirtualBox Windows XP Guest, you may have a registry problem. In this case, uninstalling guest additions completely and attempting a reinstall will not help. Some or all of the features afforded by guest additions may not.

I recently upgraded my Virtualbox from 4.0.4-something (don't remember the exact version, sorry!) to 4.1.0-73009~Debian~squeeze.
After this upgrade I've created a new Win XP x86 guest, downloaded all the updates and proceeded to install the guest additions.
My problem is that the mandatory reboot after installing the additions always hangs my guest and the only way to get out of it is to 'shut it down' (Menu - Machine - Close). If I - instead of choosing reboot - shut down the guest it shuts down nicely and I can boot it up again. Shutting down always works, but rebooting hangs the guest everytime.
So - curious as I am I booted up another guest - Win XP x64 - that I have from before upgrading Virtualbox, and that one reboots just fine, same as with an install of Linux Mint 9 fluxbox edition.
A lot of testing, and a few hours later it occured to me to look at the different versions of the Guest additions I have, and it turned out that my Windows x64 guest I have uses the guest additions from my 4.0.4-version of Virtualbox. So - just to try something new I poked around on my hard drive and found the iso for the 4.0.4-additions, I added them to my 'new' XPx86 guest, and suddenly rebooting works without any problems.
So - now I run both my x64 and my x86 guests in Virtualbox 4.1, but with the guest additions from 4.0.4 - I don't know if that will cause me any problems in the long run not to have matching versions, but as long as my guests work without visible problems...
Finally - a question - how do I proceed? Is there any way I can help out by sending a report somewhere? Is there some kind of log I can 'dump' and post? Or maybe someone is already working on this?
Thanks in advance,
